We lead our lives like water flowing down a hill, going more or less in one direction until....

18 th March 2020 I take a walk in my office. I could literally count the number of people present using my fingers. For the past few days, less and less people have been showing up. The ones that are, either live alone and are craving for human interaction or are in denial of the current situation. A few of them who notice me ask why I was coming to the office. I reply with a smile, ‘As long as even one of you guys are here, I will be here.’ The next day, my boss calls me in the morning and asks me to work from home starting that day. ~~ I guess a lot of our lives changed during March of 2020, in a matter of hours. Although it was inevitable and forthcoming, yet the result of it took all of us by surprise. All of us, even the ones who wouldn’t have looked at the news in years, started following what was happening in the world. Suddenly everyone became an analyst, looking for numbers and of course, some of us even started with our own predictive analysis. Out of all the crazi...

All influence is Immoral - immoral from the scientific point of view

Have you ever seen and infant, when they learn to move their heads and start looking around, observing things? The wonder in their eyes, the surprise and shock of seeing something new, the determination to take it all in and the confusion to understand it all… all at the same time? It’s so amazing to see them slowly start to understand how things work. No matter how much you tell them, or point it out to them that something is wrong (especially when they put their hands into their mouths), they just give you their very cute, toothless smile and your heart melts. Basically, what I am trying to say is, no matter what you can’t deter them from their goal. Of course, they don’t understand it at that time, but all kids, as we all know, are a little rebellious. They make mistakes, they brood and cry, and they make their own opinions while their brain develops. That’s why we all act the way we do in certain situations when we grow up, isn’t it? But then we grow up and we come at an age which ...

A mind troubled by doubt cannot focus on the course of victory

In these times when we feel nothing less than prisoners of war cooped up in our houses, some with their loved ones and some apart – we cannot thank modern times and its inventions enough to allow us to connect with the outside world more often than ever. For some people like me and my roommate who are stuck in the smallest room possible, Netflix has especially become the knight in shining armor. Recently I watched this series on Netflix which has taken India (and probably the world) by a storm – Money Heist. It has all the elements to keep you glued to your screens for hours – the planning, the brains, the preparation, the negotiations, a little action and lots of drama. And let’s admit it, who doesn’t love to admire an intelligent heist? Don’t worry, I won’t give any spoilers. It was while watching this series that got me thinking that if – a big if – it were all true, what is it that would impress you the most about these thieves? Their moral code or their planning? Or the idea i...

It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends

I’d take a bullet for you. I don’t know when or where this dialogue was first used, but it does have a deep meaning to it. Well, at least it used to have until the 20 th century. Still, a lot of us have thought about expressing our feelings to our friends/loved ones through this sentence. Not just because it sounds badass, but because we strongly feel this about at least one friend in our life – the best friend . I know I have imagined saying it multiple times at multiple occasions. Although it never happened but I did imagine it multiple times. That’s how we Bibliophiles are. We take a lot of time to finish up a book because there is a movie which keeps playing behind our eyes for every line we read. Well, it can also be because the book might be boring, which is highly doubtful in case of bibliophiles. And sometimes it is because few books takes us back to into our memories where we relive them. Some good, some bad. When I came across the following line it brought a lot o...

The Truth. It is a beautiful and terrible thing, and should therefore be treated with caution

There is this feeling I can’t explain. It is not there all the time. It rarely appears. But when it does come, it liberates me every time. One of the most irritating thing about a Bibliophile is they want to read every book in the world that has ever been written. It is irritating because no sooner I reach the end of a book, I end up imagining the next one that I am going to pick up. I weigh the potential risks of starting a really thick book or a classic or a mystery. What if I can’t stop reading? What if I forget all my other chores while I get engrossed in a book? Or what if I can’t finish it in a given timeline? ( Yes, I have a timeline. Big Surprise!) However, with all those anxious thoughts in my mind, I love how it feels when a book is about to end with the final conclusion, mysteries solved and a happy ending – or rather – a satisfactory ending. Especially when the author throws in a remarkable sentence that you could just read to no end. This happened when I...

Bargains we make with ourselves to justify our choices

During the past 14 years that I have been a reader, I have always come across quotes or sentences in books that hit you hard. They make you think, deeper and deeper, eventually pushing you to pen down your thoughts after dissecting that sentence. For me, that moment is now. It starts with me picking up a book at the store just because I knew the writer’s name through a recent movie that I had seen. What was so special about her book that they turned it into a movie? Why her? Why that particular story? Well, the answer to my questions were right there in front of my eyes, in a neatly stacked bookshelf. A book from that writer. The only copy of the book that I could see in that section. The last copy. That’s the problem of being ever-curious, impulse buying is always justifiable. It wasn’t until 1 year later that I picked up the book to read, when I found out the truth. I had picked up the third installment of the series, of which I had seen the first installment as a movie...
